Overview:
The University of Leeds has 32,000 students and 7,000 staff. Dr Keith Pitcher is Environmental Officer. One of his main responsibilities is to encourage a greener attitude to waste management. Keith has had to balance a £90K investment in recycling equipment and facilities with the rising cost of sending waste to landfill. In the same time landfill tax has increased from £12 per ton to £24 and will double again in the next 2 years. Keith expects their investment to be repaid in 3 years as a result of better recycling practice. The exercise has involved estimation, percentages, measures and money.
